Lack of Financial Education
a Major Cause of Too Much Debt

Often starting before high school, youngsters are provided the opportunity to use credit cards, but often lack the sills necessary to use them wisely. This lack of skills follows them into adulthood.

The average family that maintains a credit card balance every month has nearly $8,000 in credit card debt. At 18%, that requires a $150 interest payment every month. That payment might require a second job or overtime work just to make ends meet. Inability to make these payments leads to anxiety, divorce, and bankruptcy.

"Many of the debtors who come into bankruptcy court admit that if someone had warned them about the pitfalls, they would not be in that predicament," said Chief Bankruptcy Judge John Ninfo of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of New York.

A new ebook by Robert Sherman, How to Free Yourself from Credit Card Debt, attempts to help educate consumers about debt-especially credit card debt. It compares getting out of debt to losing weight. Both obesity and high debt levels are mounting problems in the United States.

So, how are the concepts of losing weight and reducing debt similar? We all know that to lose weight, you need to realize that you weigh too much, you must eat less, and you need to exercise more to burn more calories.

Robert Sherman makes reducing debt fit the same pattern. He indicates, "The only way to reduce credit card debt is to:

  • Understand what credit card debt is doing to you financially
  • Reduce your spending so you can pay off your debt
  • Earn more money so you can pay off your debt."

His ebook is organized around these three points and helps provide insight into what people think about money as they get into debt and how they need to think about money to get out of debt. It covers traditional topics about reducing spending, making a targeted spending plan, as well as credit counseling and bankruptcy.
