0 Interest Credit Card

0 Interest Credit Card

Are 0 Interest Credit Cards Always a Good Deal?

You want a 0 interest credit card. Perhaps you are paying lots of interest on a large credit card balance. Transferring your balance to a 0 interest credit card could save you a bundle of money.

Seems like a good deal. With 0 interest, it's like the credit card company is loaning you money for free.

But, you probably know that credit card companies cannot simply loan money for free, even if they offer a 0 interest credit card. There are usually strings attached.

To really know what the credit card company is offering, you have to read the fine print. The details of the 0 interest credit card offer are always hidden in the fine print.

Examine the 0 interest credit card offer for any of the following:

  • There may be a transfer fee of a certain percentage of the amount transferred. This is a way of collecting "interest" up front.
  • The actual interest rate may depend on your credit rating. 0 interest may apply only if you have a very good credit history. Many people with large credit card balances do not have a great credit history.
  • The 0 interest introductory rate may apply only to balance transfers, not to new purchases.
  • The 0 interest rate applies only for a limited time, often 6 to 12 months. Then the rate increases.
  • Your credit card payments may be applied first to your 0 interest balance transfer. This lets new purchases accumulate interest at a high rate until the 0 interest balance transfer if paid off.

The 0 interest credit card is an excellent option, especially if you can transfer your old balances to the new card and not make any purchases using the new card until your balance is paid off.
